How long does it take to learn Kubernetes?

If you already know Linux and Docker, you can learn enough Kubernetes to deploy and debug apps in about 1 to 3 months of regular hands-on practice. Being comfortable at a mid level - Helm, RBAC, autoscaling, networking - usually takes 6 to 12 months of real use. Without Linux and Docker, add a few months for those first.

Before you start - Linux and Docker

You need the Linux shell, basic networking (ports, DNS, HTTP) and Docker: building images and running containers. If these are new, spend one to three months on them first. Kubernetes is much easier once containers make sense.

Weeks 1 to 4 - core objects and kubectl

Learn Pods, Deployments, Services, ConfigMaps and Secrets. Write the YAML yourself. Use kubectl get, describe, logs and exec. Learn the common failure states - CrashLoopBackOff, ImagePullBackOff, Pending - and how to find the cause. Build: deploy an app and expose it with a Service, then break it and find out why.

Months 2 to 3 - running apps well

Add resource requests and limits, probes, scaling, Jobs and CronJobs. Learn labels and selectors well, because many problems come from them. Build: scale a Deployment, run a scheduled CronJob, mount config from a ConfigMap. At this point you can handle most junior Kubernetes tasks.

Months 4 to 12 - mid level and beyond

Learn Helm, Ingress, RBAC, NetworkPolicies and autoscaling. Use GitOps with Argo CD or Flux. Study for the CKA if the jobs you want ask for it. Real use on a team, or regular practice on a live cluster, is what makes these skills stick.
