How long does it take to become a backend developer?
Starting from zero, many people are ready for a junior backend role in about 9 to 18 months of steady practice. If you already program in another area, such as frontend or data, it can take 3 to 6 months. The time depends on how much real API and database work you have done, not on how many courses you finish.
Months 1 to 3 - one language and the basics
Pick one language - Python, JavaScript (Node.js) or Go - and learn it well: functions, data structures, errors, modules. Learn Git and the command line. Learn how HTTP works: methods, headers, status codes. Build: small command-line programs and a first web endpoint that returns JSON.
Months 4 to 6 - APIs and databases
Use a framework such as FastAPI, Flask or Express. Learn SQL with PostgreSQL: tables, joins, aggregations, indexes. Build REST endpoints with validation and correct status codes. Build: a URL shortener API, a CRUD API with a real database, an endpoint that returns 400 for bad input instead of crashing.
Months 7 to 12 - production skills
Add JWT or session login and password hashing. Add a Redis cache, rate limiting and pagination. Write tests. Package the service with Docker and deploy it. Build: an API with auth and a rate limiter, a cached endpoint, an idempotent payment-style endpoint. Start applying when you have 3 to 5 projects you can explain.
What makes it faster
Work on running services with real data. Read logs, use curl, and find why a request fails. Every bug you trace from the endpoint to the database builds the skills interviews ask about. Write a short summary of each project as you finish it so your portfolio grows as you learn.

Related questions
Is backend harder to learn than frontend?
Not harder, just different. Backend has less visual work and more databases, data flow and performance. Some people find that easier, some find it harder.
Can I learn backend development without a degree?
Yes. Many backend developers are self-taught. Projects that show you can build and run an API matter most in interviews.
When should I start applying for backend jobs?
When you can build an API with a database, auth and tests on your own, and you have 3 to 5 projects to show. Do not wait until you feel you know everything.
